Cycling Without Age was created in Denmark in 2012 and was launched in Scotland in 2017.
Referred to as CWAS, the Scottish base revolves around being a registered charity and using this to coordinate the various local Chapters that have been established in Scotland.
CWAS in Troon came along in 2025 and thanks to considerable support from Troon Development Trust has moved to having 2 Trishaws and over 20 amazing local volunteers.
The official launch in Troon in April 2026 saw the formal handing on of the core work to CWAS Troon.
Why does CWAS exist? The aim is to give people who can’t cycle a trip out as a passenger with a trained Pilot controlling the electric trishaw.
Getting people with reduce mobility out and about is great for them and rewarding for the volunteers. Very quickly the Residential Homes found the benefits so Belhaven, Queen’s View and Westbank are all regular users of the service. Supported Living Housing developments in Troon such as St Meddans Court and Princess Square as well as support groups like Hansel Village and Ivy Cottage are adding to the activities available for social gatherings
Each booked trip on the Trishaw requires a volunteer as the Pilot and a support cyclist.
We have the wonderful promenade in Troon which is ideal for trips. The passengers benefit from the social interaction with the Pilot and support cyclist.
The Trishaws themselves catch the eye and generate conversations with walkers on the promenade so all in all each trip out, which lasts about 30 to 45 minutes brings great benefit to people who spend much of their time indoors, quite often on their own.
Funding
The plan is to increase the number of trishaws to three and perhaps four over 2026.
So why do we need financial support?
Each year we have to find about £1000 to cover the costs of insuring and maintaining each trishaw. Bike Locks, Panniers, Support Stands, Access Step and Rugs are all examples of accessories we need to purchase and replace from time to time
Like so many local organisations CWAS Troon is approaching potential doners for support. Perhaps we can find a slot in any support you offer to local groups, if not this year, then maybe next.
Funds donated to support the Troon Chapter are, as with all chapters in Scotland, held centrally by Cycling Without Age Scotland (known as CWA Scotland or CWAS) Regulated by the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) Scottish Charity No. SC048128. CWAS deal with the settling of all cost involved in running the Troon Chapter and account for the money.
We also keep a note of all transactions locally so can always advise our volunteers and supporters how things stand financially.
Donations can be sent to CWAS via this OCR code:

Please add the reference Troon to ensure that it is allocated to our Troon Chapter.
